The artist I want to breifly highlight is director Darren Aronofsky.
"I try to live my life where I end up at a point where I have no regrets.
So I try to choose the road that I have the most passion on because
then you can never really blame yourself for making the wrong choices.
You can always say you're following your passion."
- Darren Aronofsky
Aronofsky attended Harvard University followed by the American Film Institute. To date he has made a handful of memorable films.
Pi (1998)
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
The Fountain (2006)
The Wrestler (2008)
Black Swan (2010)
He is currently working on a film called Noah, about the story of Noah.
I chose Darren Aronofsky because of his ability to skirt the line of independent films and mainstream films. While all of his films can be viewed as masterpieces by some. I find that Pi his first film is still his best followed by The Fountain for a close second. Considering his others which also had great critical acclaim, I am not as easily swayed for this instance with Black Swan. Aronofsky has a tendency to use very strong exaggerated visual cue or elements to drive the story and in Black Swan it was too much.
He is very aware of his success and recognizes the strain and importance of the success of his first two movies as the driving forces for his future success as a filmmaker. Ultimately, his strong sense of story telling and problem ridden characters, along with magnificent visual themes, accompanied by innovative and inspiring scores, make Aronofsky a powerhouse yet to be fully tapped.
